From the Lab to the Market: Why Britain Needs More Scientists to Become Founders

Britain has never struggled to produce brilliant science.

From world-leading universities to pioneering research institutions, the UK has an extraordinary record of discovery across medicine, engineering, biotechnology, energy and advanced materials.


The harder part is turning more of those discoveries into successful businesses.


That challenge is back in focus following a new commitment from the British Business Bank of up to £46 million to Zinc's £70 million Science-for-Impact Fund. The fund aims to help create around 80 new UK science-led companies, particularly in areas including health, advanced manufacturing, clean energy and environmental innovation.


It is an ambitious target, but it also highlights one of the biggest opportunities facing the UK economy.


We don't necessarily need more ideas.


We need more of our best ideas to make the journey from the laboratory to the market.



A Breakthrough Isn't Yet a Business


Scientific research and successful entrepreneurship require very different skills.


A researcher might identify a new technology with enormous potential, but turning that discovery into a commercial company raises an entirely different set of questions.


Who is the customer?

How large is the market?

Can the technology be manufactured economically?

How will the company protect its intellectual property?

Who should lead the business?


And, crucially, how much capital will be required before it begins generating meaningful revenue?

These questions don't diminish the importance of the science. They determine whether that science can ultimately reach the people and industries that could benefit from it.


That transition is where many promising ideas face their first real test.



Scientists Don't Have to Become CEOs


Encouraging more scientists to become founders doesn't mean expecting every academic to suddenly become a salesperson, fundraiser and chief executive.


Some will make excellent business leaders.

Others won't want to.


The strongest science-led businesses often develop when technical expertise is combined with experienced commercial leadership.


A scientist may understand a technology better than almost anyone else in the world, while an experienced entrepreneur understands how to recruit a team, raise capital, develop a route to market and build relationships with customers.


Bringing those skills together can be transformational.


The challenge for the UK is creating more environments where those relationships happen.



Deep Tech Needs Patient Capital


Building a software business can sometimes happen remarkably quickly.


Building a new medical technology, advanced material or manufacturing process is different.


There may be years of research, testing, regulatory approvals, intellectual property development and product validation before meaningful commercial revenues emerge.


That changes the investment proposition.


Investors need to understand that progress may not always be measured by rapidly increasing monthly revenue. A successful technical milestone, patent, clinical result, regulatory approval or manufacturing breakthrough can be equally important.


It also means these companies need investors prepared to think beyond the next quarter.

The new Zinc fund reflects that reality. It plans to work with scientists at the earliest stages of company creation, helping researchers develop businesses around science addressing significant societal and industrial challenges.



The UK's Universities Are an Extraordinary Asset


Some of Britain's greatest competitive advantages already exist.


Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial and universities across the country produce world-class research and highly skilled graduates. Around them, clusters have developed in areas including life sciences, artificial intelligence, quantum technology, engineering and advanced manufacturing.


But research output alone isn't the measure of a successful innovation economy.


What matters is what happens next.


When intellectual property developed in a British laboratory becomes the foundation of a growing British company, the impact can extend far beyond the original research.


Jobs are created.

Investment is attracted.

Supply chains develop.

Employees gain experience.


And, if the company succeeds, founders and investors can eventually recycle their knowledge and capital into the next generation of businesses.


That's how scientific excellence becomes an economic ecosystem.



Where Early-Stage Investors Fit In


For science-led businesses, securing the first meaningful round of external investment can be particularly challenging.


The technology may be compelling, but the commercial model can still be developing. Revenues may be limited or non-existent and considerable further investment may be required.


That is precisely the type of funding gap that early-stage investment can help address.


Schemes such as EIS and SEIS can play a role by encouraging private investors to accept the additional risks associated with backing younger, innovative companies.


They don't make an investment safe, nor does EIS eligibility make a company investable.


But they can help create an environment in which private capital is more willing to support ambitious businesses before their potential has been fully proven.


For the right science-led company, that early capital can fund the work required to reach the next milestone and, potentially, unlock much larger institutional investment later.



From Researcher to Entrepreneur


The announcement of a £70 million fund won't solve the UK's commercialisation challenge on its own.


But the ambition to create around 80 new science-led companies is significant because it focuses on something that can sometimes be overlooked in discussions about venture capital.


Before you can fund the next generation of great British companies, somebody has to create them.


That means finding promising research, identifying commercial opportunities, bringing together scientists and entrepreneurs and giving those teams the capital and support required to turn an idea into a company.


Britain already has much of the difficult part: exceptional scientists, universities, research and intellectual property.


The opportunity now is to become just as good at turning those assets into globally successful businesses.


The next great British company may already exist. It just might still be sitting in a laboratory.
